2024 Dragon dance at Cambridge Chinese Community Centre, 11th Feb.

Dragon dance require a lot more team co-ordination but a lot more fun as a team! It is a very good team building exercise and below was one of our past rehearsal:

Chinese lion Dance need a lot of physical strength(more difficult than Dragon dance) particularly on the waist, legs, arms and back muscles. Ordinarily performed by martial artists, those who are not in this category will need to put in more effort to achieve the same standard. The dance or a certain routine involves a lot of power deliveries that are like punching, dogging, kicking, stepping and do all these with the weight of the costume on the two practitioners. After a minute or two, you will get really warmed and 10 minutes of rigorous workout can burn many hundreds or calories!

For any Martial Artist who can wield the lion ‘beautifully’ (i.e., able to express its emotions and animosity nature through action) also will indirectly benefit their own art!

In my experiences, the lion dance improves my stances, structure, technique execution, stability, timing, and balance. Yes, it is challenging work. A lot of sweats! However, the reward (the feeling) is immense.

** To my students – ‘I really wished that each would learn the lion dance. Some of the exercises within you had already experienced in class. For example, the high kick, the wide horse stance. Apart from the required effort, the drumming, gong, and cymbals can also be quite additive!’

Wing Chun Kuen 詠春拳, if it has Lion Dance knowledge & attributes, that will make it if even more effective (i.e.,deadly) **
